Thermal injury from inhaling hot air is the phenomenon being described. When you draw in super-heated gases, the lining of the nose, throat, and entire airway absorbs a lot of heat quickly. That heat damages the mucosal tissue, leading to burns, inflammation, and swelling. The resulting edema narrows the airway and can cause coughing, hoarseness, and breathing difficulty, with the risk of more serious airway obstruction if the injury is severe. This is different from other inhalation hazards like oxygen deficiency (which causes hypoxia), gas and vapors (chemical irritation or toxicity), or particulate contaminants (physical irritation and blockage). The key point is that the damage in this case comes from the heat of the air itself, i.e., elevated temperatures.
